The Gunners had famously bid £40million and £1 for the striker in the summer of 2013
Luis Suarez has explained how Steven Gerrard convinced him to not join Arsenal in the summer of 2013.
The striker had scored 23 Premier League goals in the 2012/13 season and only finished behind Robin van Persie who netted 26 times.
Steven Gerrard convinced Luis Suarez to stay at Liverpool for another season The Gunners submitted a bid of £40million and £1 on the understanding Liverpool would not accept a bid of less than £40million.
Suarez was serving a 10-game ban at the time for biting Branislav Ivanovic in their 2-2 draw with Chelsea and was considering forcing a move to Arsenal who, unlike Liverpool, had Champions League football for the following season.
Suarez scored 31 league goals in his final season for the Reds Speaking to Otro, Suarez said: “We qualified for the UEFA Europa League but the season ended badly.
“I’m about to go to Arsenal, forcing myself to go, and Steven tells me ‘I promise that if you stay this year you’re going to take off and next year you’ll go to Bayern, Barcelona, Real Madrid or whichever one you want, but stay this year because you won’t be better off at Arsenal’.
Liverpool came close to winning the Premier League title in the 2013/14 season “This was the last conversation I had with Gerrard at that moment and I told my agent that I had made my decision and I was staying.
“His words convinced me in that moment. They came from a person who cared for me, who wanted my well-being, who saw me suffer during training and saw me sad.
“They were words from a true captain that had an impact in that moment and helped me a lot.”
